We will miss you, Grandma Steele

Grandma Steele

I am honored to share with you some of my most cherished memories of Grandma Steele. I find myself extremely blessed to have grown up with Grandma and Grandpa living just a bike ride away. It is thanks to her that I no longer have a snickerdoodle-shaped hole in my life. The life lessons I have learned from her have been a huge part of who I am today. For example, if a situation arises where someone is in need of having their nose salted, rest assured that I would be able to perform the procedure as Grandma has well-equipped me for such a situation.

The life that Grandma lived really, truly has impacted me. There are things that make me who I am today because of the example she set. There are also memories that I will bring with me on my own life’s journey. The Windstead Shop is one of them. I cannot count the times I road my bike to their shop just to say “hi” and hopefully get a tootsie roll. I will always look up to her when I look back on how kind and honorably she and Grandpa treated customers. I have listened to numerous stories from their son and daughters of them going out of their way to accommodate other people.

The Pizza Hut outings with our family is another that will never be emptied from my memory. I always made sure to reserve a seat in their car for the ride there.

I wish there were time to share the full stories behind the following, but for the sake of saving hours, here is a simple list of memories: Grandpa’s real name is “Bud”, gurty balls, basement playtime, walks to the park, climbing pine trees, bird watching from the huge living room window, carrots with orange juice, type writer, clotheslines, and “firemen’s dance” means slumber party at Grandma and Grandpa’s!
