Dad Hutchens Car Accident
My (Sarah) dad was in a car accident last night. Worst one he says he’s ever had, and he’s had his share. Totaled the car. Injured his body. He’s okay; very sore, but not cut or anything. Which is more than we can say for the lady who hit him. My dad says that even if she hadn’t hit him, she would have hit someone. She was turning left onto a street that just had too many cars on it. Must have been distracted or something. His phrasing: “The worst miscalculation I’ve ever seen.” Unfortunately, my family pretty much only does liability insurance. We’ve never owned a car worth insuring more than that…until now but we still didn’t. And Michigan has this silly “no-fault” insurance, so if you don’t have insurance to pay for it, you have to. :/ He’s pretty bummed about that right now. That and the fact that my mom didn’t think he should play basketball with the guys this morning. Stubborn man.
We would appreciate your prayers for his body. He’s hurting a bit, but nothing too severe. Can I just praise the Lord though right now for protecting his life? THANK YOU, LORD! I have thanked Him at least a million times this evening alone. His family desperately needs him here still. Thanks for caring with us…
Team Steele Dominates 5K
This is the fist of victory for our triumphant finish of our first 5K together.
James: 3rd 5K. 1st in age group. 6th overall. Time of 19:35.
Sarah: 1st 5K. 3rd in age group. 105th overall.
Time of 27:34.
James: I have loved running these past many months! Way to go, John Ditmer, for encouraging me to run. This 5K I ran much faster than anticipated. However, mile three was rough and if I had much more in my stomach it would be all over the board walk near the finish line. Way to go endorphins to make up for that sick feeling.
Sarah: My first mile was the fastest one I’ve run so far–7:45! It was amazing to me how much faster I ran with so many people around me. And seriously, I contemplated at great lenth (27:34, to be precise) the correlations to our walk with Christ and with each other. James has talked about it a lot since he started running; I think I’m finally feeling it myself! What a cool experience. And placing gets you hooked. At least, competitive people like me! Doing it again next weekend…
Three-generational learning
What a unique opportunity I had this evening. I tutor Zaira two times a week; we just started this week. On Tuesday, we spent much of our time studying outside, as it was so beautiful. Mom kept coming out, asking us if we wanted to come inside, if we needed a drink, etc. I declined on all accounts; I love being outside!
Today, the rain prevented us from our out-of-doors studies, so we meandered inside. Mom again asked if we wanted to sit in the living room, but Zaira preferred her bedroom. Lightning in my brain. Connections being made. I asked Mom if she wanted to listen while Zaira was reading. She nodded. Listen?? As we began, I had anything but listeners. Mom started shouting out answers before Zaira could (although Zaira is much farther ahead than Mom!). Even Abuela got into it. The best part of the night, though, was when Zaira, Mom, and Grandma all read the same story (see below). Mom looked at me in great anticipation, waiting for my approving look that she had done it right. And she had! Three generations, all learning English. Now that’s something to get excited about!
Saturday Morning Fun
We constantly have company–squirrel company, to be precise. They visit and chatter a lot. So yesterday we decided to be hospitable and put some sunflower seeds out. The following video is the footage of what we did most of Saturday morning (maybe we should get out more?).
