Ode to the Basement and God’s Work

Ode to the Basement and God’s Work

Walk down the stairs
To throw in another load
Splash! go the slippers
What do my eyes behold?!
Another inch of water
When we thought our work was done
Tears drop in the puddle
As I stand a minute, stunned
Race up the stairs
To grab a pair of boots
Call James home
For cleanup in his suit
Faithless heart that cries
There goes our tax return
Holy Spirit replies
Remember for what you yearned?
The carpet I desired
To be already in place
Could not be ruined
By this watery disgrace
Breathe the air of gratitude
For timing so divine
And call the local plumber
To unclog our water lines
A problem slightly different
(Clogged lines, not leaky walls)
Revealed a heart still learning
To trust our Lord of All
But the trusting’s coming faster
Than the water seeping in
I just hope the trusting’s mastered
So joy’s leaping can begin
(And the next household disaster
Can include sleeping in)

[…] We lost use of our basement as a regular living space February 2014 due to leaky walls, found it flooding again due to a sewer back up (twice in three days!), and discovered our water heater flushing itself […]

We’re always learning to trust. Always always. Just hopefully learning to trust faster with each catastrophe/intrusion. Thankful for all the ways God was good to you in this, Sarah :)

As with you in your house search! I feel like we’re always discovering ways that God was intentional in placing us HERE; I look forward to hearing those things from you once you’re settled in…wherever God will have you land!
