Debt Free Perks

Debt Free Perks

One of the perks that has come from our recent debtfreeness (is that a word?) is having conversations with telemarketers that are either selling debt or, most recently, selling debt consolidation. Below is a recent email sent to Dave Ramsey about a freeing call that I had.
SUBJECT: A FREEING Debt CONsolidation phone call!
Yesterday, I received a phone call from a telemarketer for a debt CONsolidation company that I was pleased to take. He was offering me a free consultation.
I told him that won’t be necessary since WE ARE DEBT FREE! (Go Dave Ramsey.) He started to laugh and said, “No, I don’t think you understand.” He began to explain that debt includes credit cards, house payments, car payments, etc. and, “We can help you settle them.”
I said, “No, I don’t think YOU understand; we don’t make ANY payments on ANYTHING. YES!”
He just laughed some more and said, “Wow. Very good. Well, have a good weekend.”
Praise the Lord for the FREEDOM that comes from being debt free!

I love conversations like that! Like the time we were looking for a car and said we wanted to spend “so much” so we could pay cash. The guy said he could get a much nicer vehicle for us if we would up the amount with a “small loan”. I said we don’t want any debt. He looked at me as one might look at an alien and said, “Do you mean to say that you couldn’t afford a $150 a month payment????” I said, “No, I mean we don’t want a $150 a month payment.” He said he didn’t think he could help me. I am afraid that in reality he was the one who needed help but he didn’t realize it!
